Gamers, your endless hours of quick reflexes and multitasking might just land you a dream gig keeping America's skies safe. The FAA is actively recruiting FAA gamers to fill a critical shortage of air traffic controllers, launching a fresh campaign that screams "you've been training for this."

With applications opening at midnight ET on April 17, 2026, the agency is betting big on video game pros who already nail the high-pressure skills needed in the control tower.

FAA Gamers Campaign Turns Gaming Skills into Real-World Paydays

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy put it perfectly: the campaign adapts to reach the next generation by tapping into gaming's "hard skills" like rapid decision-making, spatial awareness, and staying laser-focused under chaos.

The new YouTube ad is packed with gaming vibes, Xbox sound effects, and direct nods to players, urging them to "level up your career" on the official hiring site. No college degree required (only about 25% of current controllers have one), and after three years on the job, the average salary hits over $155,000 with full federal benefits.

It's not just hype. The FAA faces a shortage of thousands of controllers, down about 6% in the last decade and needs to hire big to handle booming air traffic. This "supercharged hiring" push could bring in up to 9,000 new controllers by 2028.

Exit interviews with current controllers reveal many credit gaming for sharpening their ability to juggle complex situations and think fast, exactly what's required to guide 2.9 million daily passengers safely. The FAA's own site highlights how academy training feels like "leveling up your skills in a simulated environment," complete with advanced tech replacing old-school paper strips and floppy disks.

Applications stay open until roughly 8,000 are received, then it's aptitude tests, medical checks, security clearance, and paid training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. Live Zoom Q&As drop April 16-17 for anyone curious.

This isn't the FAA's first gamer-friendly move, they ran a similar "Level Up" push back in 2021, but the fresh gaming-themed ad and urgent staffing needs make it hotter than ever. If you've got what it takes in the virtual world, the real skies might be calling.

Ready to trade your controller for the tower? Head to the FAA's hiring page and apply starting April 17. Your next high-score could be a six-figure career keeping planes apart at 30,000 feet.
