If you've been waiting to return to an alien ocean world, the sequel to the beloved underwater survival game is almost here. Subnautica 2 is launching into Early Access on May 14, 2026, and it promises to expand on the original's captivating exploration and survival gameplay with brand-new features and a bigger world to discover.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Subnautica 2 Early Access experience and why you might want to jump in early.

Mark your calendars for May 14, 2026. On this day, Subnautica 2 will become available in Early Access on multiple platforms: PC (via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S, with Day One availability on Xbox Game Pass.

The game will be priced at $30 during Early Access, allowing eager fans to start exploring early while the developers continue expanding the experience (Unknown Worlds on Steam, Polygon).

What to Expect in Subnautica 2 Early Access

Unlike the original game, this sequel introduces an official optional multiplayer mode supporting up to four players with no player-vs-player combat, enabling cooperative exploration and survival adventures with friends. The building system is overhauled, and new vehicles and craftables will be added over time as development progresses (Subnautica Wiki, PC Gamer).

Expect the game to stay in Early Access for two to three years, during which the developers will expand the narrative and world until it's ready for a full 1.0 release. This phase is designed to be community-driven, with player feedback helping shape the final content and polish (Polygon interview).

Why the Delay Until 2026?

Subnautica 2 has faced delays, with some controversy surrounding its extended development timeline. The publisher Krafton postponed the Early Access launch to ensure the game is ready for players, despite some internal disputes regarding the timing.

The delay also relates to contractual earnout terms tied to revenue milestones through 2025. Despite the hurdles, the developers remain committed to delivering a polished and content-rich underwater adventure (Game Developer).
